A Review Of Watchmen by in2it.sg

watchmen

Anyone who likes the more mature tone and character complexity of The Dark Knight, the ensemble character stories of the X-Men, the political trappings of V for Vendetta, and the violent film noir story telling of Sin City. Watchmen is like a combination of all the above.

Is Watchmen brilliant? No it's not. But it has a brain, and it tries to say something smart which is more than you can say for any other comic book movie we've seen thus far save V for Vendetta. Spiderman and X-Men were good movies but at best they were a simplistic moral tale with easy to understand black and white characters. Watchmen dares to explore the gray, making you view characters in multiple lights.

watchmen2The original graphic novel, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, was published by DC in 1986 first serially and then in a single volume, and it quickly gained a following in discriminating geek circles. The book was very much a product of its moment, both in the history of comics - which were scouting new horizons of complexity and thematic ambition - and in the wider world that "Watchmen" mirrored. It was a perfect setting of cold war America, defined by a Nixon presidency and a nuclear fallout. The masked heroes in this movie were violent, vain and dangerous, even while being able to continually save the world from the other destruction that would befall it.

There is also a nod of homage to Apocalypse Now and a soundtrack of baby boomer anthems that will leave you wondering if you were caught in the 1980s era and at the length of close to 3 hours, it just might have been.
