MMA: The Moves

As promised in our first article on Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), in2it.sg will be explaining to you guys MMA's signature moves! Master these moves and unleash your fury at the Martial Combat's Superfight Championship Belt Battles at Resorts World Sentosa this coming August.

A little short recap before we begin!

MMA gained popularity over time as it pit fighters from different martial arts background up against each other. There is no one martial art that is more effective than the other, hence as fighters from different backgrounds come together, several dominant fighting techniques will evolve. This is the essence of MMA. Over the years, MMA has dominated the North Americans' pay-per-view scene as the most watched sport since 2006. MMA takes skill and wit to a higher level. Combining fighting techniques from the various full body contact sports, it draws competitors and spectators from the broad spectrum of all the various martial arts.

When fighters engage in ground fighting, many will find it boring or even confusing. However, a lot goes on on the ground! To help you better understand what happens during the upcoming matches on the 18th and 19th of August, in2it.sg will be introducing you some moves from MMA!

There are 2 basic ground fighting positions, The Mount and The Guard.

The Mount: This is when the fighter is on top, in a dominant position. The fighter on top is in a mount down position, holding his opponent's head down. This gives the fighter the advantage to striking without any restrictions, leading to him ending the fight.

The Guard: When the bottom fighter is in guard position, he is on his back and legs put forth to protect him against his opponent. He may be at a disadvantage but martial arts disciplines like Brazilian JiuJitsu enables him to execute submission moves or escape through transitions or reversals.

To force your opponent to submit, there are a few moves which will definitely make your opponent bow out of the competition in minutes!

Rear Naked Choke: Carried out from behind, the fighter will wrap one arm around his opponent's neck with his forearm pushing against one side of the neck and his bicep against one side of the other. His other arm will push against the back of his opponent's head, lock his feet against his opponent's flanks and expand his chest until the opponent taps out. Sounds deadly doesn't it? This move will put pressure on the opponent's windpipe causing stress to the capillaries which carry blood and oxygen to the head.

Guillotine: The Guillotine choke can be executed both standing and on the ground. The fighter will slip an arm under his opponent's chin, against his throat, then grab that wrist with his free hand and begin pulling upward. Once again, this move puts pressure on the capillaries, causing the opponent to tap out.

Arm Triangle: Carried out from a guard position, the fighter will pull his opponent forward with his arm behind the opponent's neck and with that arm's hand, grasp his own bicep while placing his other hand's palm on the back of the opponent's head. From there, he'll push his opponent to the side and push his head down until he submits. Similar to the moves above, this will also cut off blood circulation.

Apart from the 3 deadly moves described above, there are much more. You just have to watch a MMA match! Come on down to Resorts World Sentosa on the 18th and 19th to witness pride, honour and glory at its finest.
