When? 14th to 26th August 2010-07-28
Where? All over Singapore.
Who? More than 5000 athletes and officials
Huh? Singapore beat Athens, Bangkok, Turin and Moscow to be the first ever city to hold the Summer Youth Olympic Games.

Over 170 countries are expected to participate in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. The athletes will range from 14 to 18years old and will compete in 26 different sports. No one sport is easier that the other, each having its own challenges. Being a youth event, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) made room for some changes. This included basketball being played "street ball" style, games being held outside with fewer players. Water polo and synchronized swimming were also left out of the aquatics discipline. As for cycling, road and track cycling were not included as they were deemed boring. To add an edge to the games, modern pentathlon and sailing were added as youths were into more exciting sports.

A third of Nanyang Technological University's hostels was set aside as accommodation for athletes and officials, the Youth Olympic Games Village. Broken up into two sections, the Residential Zone and Village Square where the Cultural and Educational Programme (CEP) would be held. It is through the CEP that the IOC hopes to impart the values of Olympism the youths so that they will grow up with the values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect.

Currently, the Youth Olympic torch is in the hands of the Mexicans and will be making its way down under to Auckland, New Zealand. The Youth Olympic torch takes its design inspiration from fire and water. Fire representing the youth's passion and burning desire to learn and excel, blazing the trail in life. Water represents Singapore, with its origins as a seaport; and the vibrant and dynamic nature of Singapore as an island city-state. Once the torch is lit in Olympia, Greece, it must remain lit throughout the games until the closing ceremony hence a safety lantern was constructed to "preserve" the flame. At the start of each relay day, the Youth Olympic Flame is taken from the safety lantern to light the torch. At the end of the day, the Flame from the torch is transferred to the safety lantern for safeguarding. A number of safety lanterns are kept alight in the event where the flame goes out.
