Stargazing @ The Observatory
We hear that you are fast running out of ideas on what to do on a Friday night. After all, it is the start of the weekends, after a whole drilling week at work or school. If you are looking for an “other-worldly” romantic escapade under the stars, we thought you would appreciate taking a trip to the Science Centre Observatory. See stars, literally.
Remember how some of you used to be a “Young Astronomer” during your primary school days? Well, those times spent collecting stamps for your “Your Scientist” card award, did you actually have an ambition to be an astronomer? You don’t really have to be the next Neil Armstrong to reach the moon, or be part of the NASA team to appreciate astronomy, you know? If you, like many other budding astronomy lovers like discovering about planets, stars and moon, why not drop by the Observatory @ Science Centre on a Friday evening? After all, it is free admission!
From shooting stars sightings to rare eclipse viewings, this is the place to gather for a vantage stargazing experience. Telescopes are readily available with friendly staff around to guide you on how to use the instrument properly for optimal viewing experience. Don’t be surprised to see how there are actually some regulars around who brought their own telescopes to the Observatory! These are “hardcore” stargazers who have probably read enough astronomy books and seen enough stars to tell you what’s UP in the night skies! So, feel free to mingle, and walk away with some really cool insights!
Recently, our in2it.sg team got to check out the Observatory. Check out about our wonderful experience in the article here!
And before I end this entry, here’s a poem I wrote a while back about an awesome meteor shower I got to witness.
Oh, Shooting Stars
The velvet night sky Was painted with luminous stars. Shining as they were, Like small Christmas ornaments.
Glorious Moon was absent, With the rolls of fluffy clouds. Oblivious in the night sky, Anticipating an excitement.
Then came the streak Of illumination. One so fast, It may be hallucination.
There went another, And more on cue. One could only wonder The beauty and the splendour.
Too fast to stop, To look and stare. For they flashed In the speed of light, Unabashed.
Too fast to ruminate, To make a wish. For those bright lights, Would soon vanish.
Fallen stars go somewhere But who would have known Where they had gone?
Shooting stars, Oh, shooting stars, So I wonder where you are?
Sights like this may not last, But at least that was quite a blast! Watching the night sky in a different light, What an incredible unforgettable dusk!
| Tip: If you have an Android phone, download the Google Sky Map from the Android apps market. An excellent app to use to point out stars, identify planets and discover the universe above you! Besides, it is a pretty cool way to impress your chick about your awesome astronomy knowledge! |
