Something Old, Something New
Nature grows, changes and adapts as time passes. Animals, plants, insects and humans all go through a stage of evolution. Technology is the same. Technology advances and moves forward, changes and adapts, discards things that are obsolete and have no more use. Technology has come a long way, and things have progressed at an extremely rapid pace. Let’s take a look at how things were and how they are now!
Remember the times when having a dial-up internet connection was the best thing ever? When you would gleefully wait an hour for a 3mb video to load and when you would yell at someone to get off the phone because no one could be on the phone and on the internet at the same time? In this day and age, the dialup is like an urban myth; in fact forget landlines, everyone’s gone Wi-Fi! No longer are you bound to your computer in order to check your email neither do you have to stay in one place to online chat with your friends. Everything is quick, easy and on the go and all this in less than two decades!

But when you talk about being on the go, you definitely can’t miss out on your mobile phones. It used to be that one family only had one phone and young boys and girls would stalk that phone waiting for that one special call. Now, not only can you make phone calls, you can also surf the internet, play games send text messages and take photos. Sometimes it seems like the phone can do so many things, you forget that it was primarily made for one thing; phone calls!

Going to the movies used to be a treat, something special to do on a date, something that could only be done at a theater. Nowadays you can just walk into a superstore in a mall and grab a DVD off the shelf or get a digital copy from the internet. Although people still do enjoy going to the cinema to catch an odd film, more and more people are into setting up their own home theater systems to watch their favorite films on Blu Ray over and over again. Speaking of DVDs and Blu Ray..
vs
In the beginning, we had the Video Home System. The VHS allowed us to bring back copies of our favorite shows to watch at our own time. You would put the tape into the deck, play it and had to rewind it if you wanted to watch it again. But now we’ve done away with that hassle with Compact Discs! Since the introduction of CDs, we’ve made leaps and bounds in terms of video and sound quality of these take-home copies. Images are sharper, more crisp, while sound is brighter and clearer plus you don’t have to rewind them anymore!

It used to be that kids would play with whatever was around them at that point in time, but since then, toys have evolved into a totally new category. From simple water pistols to full blown water cannons with hydro packs, from a single Barbie with one dress to a whole entourage of Barbie and friends with a convertible, nothing has remained untouched in this day and age.. except..
(caption) Well, it’s not like you can really do anything to a Slinky to begin with anyway.
As humans evolve, so have our toys. Kids these days are exposed to so much mass media that the toy industry has had to keep up by developing new ways to reinvent old toys. From Cops and Robbers to Ninjas and Shinigami, from Tag to Laser Tag and Paintball, toys are probably the fasting evolving industry that doesn’t actually change. When you get down to it, all it is is just more and more add ons to the good old stuff.
Just goes to show that sometimes, the ‘goodies’ really are the ‘oldies’.
