A reel inspiration for a real adventure

It may have painted a frightening scenario for many but for the adventurous amongst you, the movie ‘127 Hours’ may have stirred a silent penchant to explore canyons. And in case you didn’t know, there are several notable one worth exploring within the borders of our northern neighbour. The former tin-mining town of Gopeng in Perak, Malaysia is one destination worth considering.
Canyoning, also known as canyoneering or waterfall abseiling if it is down a waterfall, is an adventure sport that has only really taken off in these parts over the last couple of years. It is a rare opportunity to get real close and discover the wonders of nature (canyons, gorges and waterfalls) in its uncontaminated form.
Once you get the hang of it, chances are your next trip down will take longer as you stop every now and then between your descent to catch the scenic views of a classic Malaysian rainforest (fauna, flora and wildlife included) from a perfect vantage point.
If you are new to the sport or afraid of heights, you can always arrange with canyoning pros to help you navigate your way down. Even though there are various challenges that cater for just about anyone above six years of age, safety is never compromised.
Most eco-tour operators provide all the necessary abseiling and safety equipment so all you really need are several changes of attire (you will get wet and dirty) and a good pair of trekking shoes.
If you have some time to spare, you might like to arrange for a caving or white-water rafting adventure too.
Whatever you decide, you will definitely have a genuine experience with the Great Outdoors and perhaps discover what it’s really like to be truly one with nature.
