If you haven’t heard about it, Cacophony.SG's PK Challenge @ Frontier is holding its auditions on 16th July 2011. A singing competition initiated by members of a youth club, it is now a nationwide singing competition looking for aspiring singers who want a platform to shine!

Since the competition heat is near, we got the privilege to interview one of the guest judges for the competition – ex-Idol finalist, Jasmine Tye. As one of the runner ups in Singapore Idol in 2006, Jasmine's powerful vocals combined with her sweet girl-next-door look earned her as one of the hot favourites in the competition.

We got to talk with the demure singer to find out more about her life in general. She also shares some insights on the music industry and what it takes for competitors to own the stage.

1) How's life for you after the Idols?
I’ve been good! I’ve been busy dabbling in music and theatre productions. I’m also fighting hard for my career in the Biomedical industry.

2) What inspired you to join the competition?
I’ve been singing and performing when I was really young. I started off from church choir, participating in musicals and plays and slowly worked my way to participating in competitions.

It was really my dad who encouraged me to join. I was very shy prior to Idol and my dad wanted me to move out of my comfort zone and challenge myself.

3) How did you deal with the pressure during the competition?
I’m a practical person. If I feel that I'm biting more than I can chew, I’ll try to cut down on distractions. For example, postponing outings with my friends and less TV time and concentrate on the competition.

I think having fun really helps! Surround yourself with great friends and family would help too.

Try to look towards the prize and not dwell too much on the pressure.

4) What do you think of the local music scene?
Singapore has some amazing talents. Check out Inch Chua, The Goodfellas… Awesome music!

Our classical music scene is doing very well too. Young and famous pianist, violinist and cellist…

I’m glad people are investing more on our music scene. I think we'll be able to bring forth more outstanding local artists We can place a bet… I say another 5 more years and we'll have another JJ Lin.

5) In your opinion, what are some other qualities a good singer should possess, besides having the voice?
It's not necessary about a good voice. I believe in "Total Package". Your voice should complement how you dress, your personality and charisma.

I mean we are no longer living in the radio era where we just listen to music. Most of us seek to be entertained and that’s why artists like Madonna, Britney Spears and Rihanna are doing so well.

It’s a bonus if you have been blessed with good vocals. If not, find something that you’re good at like dancing? Look at Rain

6) What are judges really looking for in a contestant?
I’m not sure about the others but I like to see how one interprets a song. How the contestant portrays himself and to the audience.

After watching so many performances, the one which leaves the strongest impression would probably win.

7) Are there any songs contestants should never attempt in an audition?
There are no boundaries but always pick a song that will play to your strength. Don't pick a rap song when you are good at singing classical songs. Never pick a song that the judges cannot identify with. For example don't sing me a korean song because I will not understand a thing.

8) Any final tips for the contestants?
Final tips.... I'll always remeber what the 3 golden tips given to me by my dad. 1) Pick a song that you sound amazing in 2) Practise at least 100 times 3) Say a little prayer
