Constellation: Ursa Major, ‘the Great Bear’ (includes the Big Dipper.) Story behind it: Callisto, a servant of the hunter Artemis, was impregnated by Zeus. Hera, Zeus’ wife, turned Callisto into a bear in a jealous rage when the latter gave birth to Zeus’ son, Arcas. The little Arcas grew to be a great hunter. When he was hunting one day, the bear Callisto heard his voice and galumphed toward him in joy. Arcas panicked and almost killed his own mother, when Zeus zapped Arcas into a bear too, grabbed them both by the tails, and flung them both into the sky as Ursa Major and Ursa Minor! |

Constellation: Ursa Minor, ‘the Little Bear’, the Little Dipper Story behind it: As above. The end of the tail is the North Star, which never changes position in the sky. |

#3
Constellation: Orion Story behind it: Look for the three stars in a row! The distinctive line forms Orion’s belt. The lover of Artemis, the great hunter Orion, arrogantly boasted that he could destroy any creature on the Earth. Offended, Artemis conspired with a scorpion to prove him wrong. Orion was killed by a scorpion, one of the smallest animals! Regretting her actions, Artemis beseeched Jupiter to place Orion in the sky opposite Scorpio so that he could see the scorpion coming and flee in the opposite direction. |

Constellation: Cassiopeia Story behind it: The constellation Cassiopeia is distinguishable as a W-shape. Queen Cassiophia, the mother of Andromeda, was a vain beauty. She arrogantly said that she possessed more beauty than the Nereids themselves. The Nereids, sea nymphs known for their beauty, became furious and asked sea king ultimate Poseidon to punish Cassiopeia. Poseidon put Cassiopeia and her husband, the king Cepheus in the sky- but made Cassiopeia spend half of every year sitting upside-down in her chair. |

#5
Constellation: Cepheus Story behind it: See above. The constellation Cepheus is easily identified as it looks like a child’s drawing of a house. When Poseidon wanted to punish Cassiopeia, he sent a great tsunami to ravage Cepheus’ kingdom. The only way to save it was to chain Andromeda, his daughter, to the rock. However, she was saved by a hero Perseus, whom she promptly fell in love with. Of course, Andromeda was already betrothed to Cepheus’ brother Phineus. A battle ensued when Cepheus refused to hand Phineus’ rightful bride over, and Cepheus fled the scene, eventually being cast into the sky with his vain pot wife. |
