Why I Love My Genre

3 youths, 3 genres.

Because artistes like Katy Perry and LMFAO top the billboard chart in recent years, pop, hip-hop and R&B are the genres most commonly listened to among adolescents island-wide. Mostly introduced through clubs and radio, popular songs vary in genre. However, there are a few that have not made the mainstream yet.

in2it.sg interviews three young people who have not been converted to the hip-hop and R&B crowd yet.

indie
Rebecca Koo, 24
Genre: Indie Rock

Why: Rebecca alleges that she prefers indie music above all else as it is not mainstream. She says that mainstream music “just does not have the same appeal”.

Manchester Orchestra, Santogold and Augustana are most-played in her iPod, and she says that she finds indie rock lyrics particularly meaningful.

Indie, she says, is a whole different world in itself

blues
Wei Chuan, 20
Genre: Blues

Why: Wei Chuan confesses that he used to listen to the blues genre as a child. He suspects that this is the nostalgic factor that causes him to be so attached to this genre of music.

Janis Joplin, the Dire Straits and Chet Baker are among his favourites, and he tells us that he finds the blues genre particularly soothing to listen to.

He also says that he appreciates the rhythm of blues music, and the lyrics as well.

rock
Nandini Nair, 20
Genre: Rock

Why: For Nandini, she feels that the rock genre suits her lifestyle best. This is due to not only the fast-paced beat of rock, but also the lyrics.

Muse and Avenged Sevenfold are among her influences, and she claims that their lyrics are about politics and love.

She also says that when she exercises, rock is the genre that she listens to most as the rapid beats keep her motivated and going longer. In a British study in 2009, it was proven that increasing the tempo of music listened to also increases heart rate and mileage!

Now you know what to listen to during a workout!
