Golden heartIf there is someone with a heart of gold, in2it thrones SAFRACS vice chairman, Ong Choon Seng. It has been 9 years since Ong started volunteering for the less fortunate. "Calling to passion" describes all about Ong's faithful commitment to the community. Like everyone else his desire of wanting to serve started off with endless procrastination which counts for nothing but excuses to him now. Ong took the leap of faith when he chanced upon SAFRACS' pamphlets at old BM's clubhouse, it was from then on that his passion for volunteering developed into an essential bit of his life.
Being a volunteer with MINDS every Saturday afternoon, followed by dinner and hanging out with fellow volunteers has became Ong's routine. He said: "if there is no activity for MINDS, I will feel the sense of lost". Thus, weekends without SAFRACS encompasses lazing at home or going back office to get work done. Ong will never forget his personal most memorable charity event held in the clubhouse on Lunar Chinese New Year (he forgot which year it was). It is heart warming to volunteer and experience working together to serve with the rest (other volunteers), who have a lot of initiative and passion to serve with a selfless nature. "I wish for the mass public to get to know us better and subsequently join us as volunteers. The greatest joy and motivation I have been getting all these years is the smile and appreciation from beneficiaries." Currently, Ong is looking forward to November's Asian Women's Welfare Association (AWWA) event at Ang Mo Kio. "I adore the challenge of having activities for the folks staying in the 1-room HDB flat at their void deck (we have not been doing that for some time). It is time to engage with the elderly openly in the public, in the public's eyes to create awareness" In addition, the Christmas celebration for the children at TP clubhouse. The first step is always the most difficult step. It will require you to move out of comfort zone and cross that line of procrastination. Do not be like me, delaying to serve; time should not be an issue, it is just how we manage it. Your every little bit counts.
